Montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR Trail Running Shoe - Women's

The Montrail Hurricane XCR is a waterproof-breathable bootie made with GoreTex® XCR barrier and high-performance trail running features. Chosen training shoe of ultramarathon legend David Horton, it offers great protection from the elements and trail hazards. Montrail's patented stretch tongue construction creates a sock-like fit to avoid rubs. The flexible board last and supportive upper provide substantial arch and midfoot stability. The sawtooth lug pattern offers ample traction. Support over the long haul—even with heavy loads—is anchored in the medially-posted midsole. The forefoot and toe box are roomy for wider feet but your narrower heel is held securely (to prevent blisters) by the heel counter and snug upper.

Bottom Line: For serious training in every condition, Hurricane Ridge XCRs keep your feet in the eye of the storm.

Montrail Hurricane Ridge Sneakers

By:

Okay. This is my fifth pair of these. I don't know what I'll do when Montrail stops making them. I love these. They last me about 10 to 12 months - depending on how many mountains we climb. Only issue is that they sometimes get dry and brittle and the Gore-Tex can rip open. This new model seems to have taken care of that problem.

I need a women's waterproof trail running shoe with a wide toe box...any recommendations?

Look no further... The "Montrail fit" consists of a wider toe box, snug through the mid-foot, and a narrow heel. If you are looking for a waterproof shoe with a wider toe box... this would be a great choice. Hope this helps!

size up!

go a whole size larger! I'm an 8.5 and 9.5 fit like a dream. Great shoe otherwise! I ordered an 8.5 at first (didn't think to read the reviews-duh!). Thank goodness i was able to exchange for a larger size. Just call me Bigfoot.

Just What I Wanted

By:
December 30, 2008

I simply wanted a cold weather trail running shoe. Being a fan of other Montrail trail shoes, I tried the Hurricane. My first run with them consisted of a long, technical, and icy run in the Columbia Gorge. They performed very well, though I received some minor blisters...to be expected. My feet stayed very warm, dry, and the shoes had great traction on the long icy sections. I was more than pleased with the shoes. I am excited to use these shoes during the rest of the winter, though I know they will be way too warm for other seasons.

Amen to that!

Love these shoes - have bought the last 3 versions because of the perfect fit, ideal ruggedness and ability to traverse all kinds of terrain. But this little plastic lace hole broke off on my second run and compromises the integrity of this otherwise amazing shoe. Looks like they've replaced it with the Continental Divide Trail shoe sans the little plastic thingy. Happy Trails!

Definitely waterproof

By:
December 28, 2008

The shoes are indeed well sealed and waterproof. However, they are VERY narrow and hard to slide onto your feet. When I first tried them, they felt tight but I kept them, thinking they would stretch with use but they are so narrow that they cut off my circulation. So, I would not recommend them for anyone with an medium or wide foot.

The best - and yet the worst

By:
December 17, 2008

So, these shoes are AWESOME, except for the fact that I had to return them twice!! The small plastic lace hole at the top broke off of two pairs of shoes within a matter of 2 months. If you live int the mtns or in a cold climate, these are wonderful shoes, sans the fact that they have a major defect. PRAYING that the next model does not have this stupid little plastic lace hole.

Good shoe, but VERY tough to get on

By:
December 16, 2008

The montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR appeared to be a very well made, quality shoe. I had such a tough time getting them on, that I had to return them. I don't consider myself as having a high instep, but they were still very difficult to get on. If you have a high arch, you may want to consider another mode..

best trail shoe

By:
October 28, 2008

So happy to find these available here! My first pair performed in all conditions from cold, icy winter road runs to trails in summer to wearing while working. They're flexible but sturdy and needed no breaking in. Gore-tex never lasts forever, but my feet stayed dry in these for longer than I expected.

Run over anything these!

By:
May 28, 2008

These shoes perform like crazy. I felt no fear stomping over jagged rocks, uneven terrain, or loose scree. The exterior of the shoe protects the sides of your feet as well and the low profile meant I never rolled my ankle! Unfortunately they were too narrow in the toe box area, and I need a wide toe box. Customer service was awesome about taking my shoes back even though I had worn them to try them out.

LOVE THEM

By:
January 21, 2008

I love these shoes. They were comfortable from the moment I put them on, though, I always wear new shoes around house, town or weight lifting to break them in before going out on the trail. I went on muddy, steep trails and they provided great support, traction and were waterproof. They cleaned up in a snap too. There is plenty of room in the toes and the heel and arch have a snug fit. The shoe has just the right amount of structural support and sole flexibility. I love the way they hug my feet. I have a medium width foot and a relatively high arch. I put my orthotics in them and they fit and felt great. I ordered my normal size. I haven't abused them, so I can't remark on their longevity.

excellent shoes/excellent customer service

December 3, 2007

Great shoes! Super comfortable and, so far, very durable. As a bonus, this store has the best customer service I've dealt with in a long time. When you call or email, it's not just drones on the other end. Everyone is very helpful.

So light you could fly!

By:
April 12, 2007

These are my first pair of trail running shoes, and while I have no intentions of running on trails in these shoes(unless I am being chased by a mountain lion, and then there maybe some running involved), they have made hiking more enjoyable. I own another pair of Montrail hiking boots, and have literally taken them around the world with me, but at times, they felt like they weighed more than my backpack! These are amazingly light, just like you are wearing regular running shoes, only with more gecko-like gripping power! Plus, I live out in Arizona, and my other hiking boots could keep a snowman's foot warm in a blizzard. These trail runners provide quite a bit more breathe-ability. All in all, I have not owned them long, but I would recommend them highly to anyone (plus, they come in blue...my favorite color)!! Cheers!

best for cold river crossings

By:
January 4, 2007

I do regular 6-13 mile trail runs on steep rocky muddy terrain with calf deep river crossings. These shoes are very, very waterproof. If water gets in over the top, a wet suit effect occurs the thin layer of water warms and you are fine again. On rocky mountainous terrain, very foot punishing, these were stable and my feet did not feel bruises. They are not for long, street runs as they are too stable and not cushioned for street. If you twist ankles on rocky terrain, like toe box room, like a snug ankle and padded foot top, and ability to stay dry in snow and creeks, try these Montrails!

Great pair of trail running shoes

By:
November 11, 2006

At first, the shoe felt long and boxy, but after a 3 mile break-in run my feet made new friends. I enjoy the super stable heel cup and the roomy toe box. I have narrow feet and a narrow heel but these fit great. I never realized how much more fun I'd have on the rocky terrain I used to bitch about; now I run like a jackrabbit through the canyon and I have these rock-solid supports around my feet to help me keep my ankles in line. Love them, love being able to ford creeks in them without getting wet toes--I'll buy another pair soon because I hope these don't get outmoded. Highly recommended for long trail runs on even very rugged terrain. Great buy!

great weatherproof shoes

By:
October 23, 2006

Great shoes. I have run on muddy trails and in the snow (already!) with these and they have proved themselves. No wet feet! I usually wear an 8 in running shoes, but a 7 1/2 in these- they run true to size.

AWESOME trail shoes!!!

By:
October 12, 2006

I did my first major trail endurance run. 24.9 miles of BaldEagle Mountain. The Hurricane Ridge Shoe fit perfect, felt great, cushioning, great traction, kept my feet dry (until I hit the deep streams, over, and over), but expected that. I would recommend this shoe to any trail runner. My feet felt great all day in these shoes. My ONLY complaint is the terrain was so rocky at points my ankles rubbed a little with all the twisting, but nothing a higher pair of socks can't cure. GREAT shoe, try it. Won't be my last pair. Oh, and ladies, got lots of comments on the Blue color, WILD!!!

Great shoe!

By:
September 14, 2006

I've completed four marathons this summer (one a month since May) so I'm pretty serious about what I wear on my feet. Two of these marathons were on trails, and I tried two different pairs of shoes (Keen's Ochio, sp?) and this one -- this shoe is top notch. For me, the Keen was too soft and bendy, and I ended up with a foot bruise (again, probably just me, but it HURTS). The Hurricane Ridge Trail Runner answers the prayers of a sore foot while pushing on -- "oh please don't let this landing hurt too much ... ahh, that was good" I'm pretty tough, my trails are rugged, and I sometimes run in the wee hours of the am/pm so slopping around rocks and roots is inevitable, hence the worry about the landings ... I'd recommend this shoe to all my mates.

Great unique design

By:
September 10, 2006

This is my first experience with a Montrail shoe, and so far I'm very impressed. The toe box is wide, and it has a different fit than other shoes I have worn. After first putting them on I assumed I would get blisters, but they have been perfect. They have decent support in the arches, and the traction was good enough for a steep, rocky hike. I especially like the tongue design, which is not loose like other shoes. This more seamless design makes the shoes a bit harder to put on, but 100% more comfortable.

These montrails rock!

By:
June 6, 2006

These shoes are great! When it was time to retire the Hurricane Ridge I got in 2004 after miles of trail running and day hikes, I didn't even consider shopping around for other brands/styles. I loved the old pairs I had and so I bought this newer model in Granite/Mango color. You don't have to wear them too long to break them in. It's very comfortable, offering ample amount of space for my toes even with my wide feet. I use it for trail running, day hikes and even light backpacking trips. It is very supportive, you barely feel the unevenness of the trail. It also does not skimp out on flexibility and you'll notice it on faster trail runs. It has good traction even on icy patches. Waterproofness is exceptional. I definitely recommend the Montrail Hurricane Ridge XCR for those looking for an all around, all weather trail running shoes.

Fabulous shoes

By:
May 10, 2006

I absolutely love these shoes. I am purchasing my second pair, and I've worn out my first pair after about 2 years. They are awesome for backpacking, hiking, and general everyday wear. I have really high arches that can be problematic, but these shoes were perfect for my feet.

Super shoe

By:
March 22, 2006

This is my second pair of this model. I wear them every day for dog walking and training runs in all kinds of weather, year-round. They are reliable, comfortable, and durable. They are stiff at first and require breaking in, but after that, absolutely no complaints. I will be buying a third pair as soon as I need them!

I love these things...

By:
November 17, 2005

I bought my first pair about 2 1/2 years ago. I wore them every day, for everything. Great running shoes, probably the best I've worn. I thrashed the first pair (by normal standards) they still look and feel pretty good, but was itching for a bright new shiny pair. Maybe some improvements have been made, because second pair is holding up even better than the first. Waterproof, durable, excellent traction, and extremely comfortable for a slightly pronated stride like I have. I’m very impressed, they’re worth the money.

I love this shoe. I have narrow feet, so the fit was perfect. No slipping, no break-in period. I was able to take them out of the box and do a 6-mile trail run. It was like it was made for my foot.

Montrail shoes

By:
May 2, 2005

I tried on this shoe more than 9 months ago in a retail store. I was impressed with the way it fit my foot and with the exceptional ground feel and stability. I was initially disappointed in the shoe when I finally ordered and received it. I found the sole liner to be very cheap, like in a discount store brand shoe. I didn't expect this in a shoe which retails for over $100. Despite my concern, I elected NOT to purchase an expensive aftermarket footbed and decided to just wear them like they were. After a couple weeks of intermittent wear I took them on a desert hike in Nevada last week and can't fault them whatsoever. The exterior sole traction is superb, especially on loose gravel and rocks. They were exceptionally comfortable after 10 plus miles daily. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a comfortable low cut trail hiking shoe.

Bring on the Hurricanes!

By:
March 27, 2005

I love this shoe, but there are some things to consider. First, yeah, a little pricey. Second, the fabric next to the little plastic waves wrapped open on me...after almost a year of constant wear. I work at an outdoor school, teach six hours a day in every kind of weather imaginable, and the Gore-Tex liner has kept my feet happy:) I'm buying my next pair now.

Too Much Money

By:
March 12, 2005

I work in a garden center and am always looking for shoes that are waterproof and hold up to being abused. These shoes were great for about 3 months and then they started falling apart around the clear hard plastic designs. I have had other Gore-Tex shoes for work that cost less and lasted longer. Other than they fell apart really fast these shoes were good. I definitely agree that they fit well and stay on you feet, but for the money they are not worth it!!

3 pairs and counting...

By:
March 6, 2005

I am getting ready to purchase my fourth pair of these awesome shoes. The traction is great; I can ease down the steepest boulder without fear. Enough support for lightweight backpacking, but enough flexibility for shorter hikes or runs. Gore-tex works great for hopping streams or running in the rain. And despite warnings that GTX doesn't breathe in hot conditions, I wear these shoes in the Phoenix, AZ heat without complaint. My only complaint so far is the expense...but they are well worth it.

Hurricane Ridge Rocks!

By:
February 15, 2005

I wouldn't typically take the time to review a product but I can't say enough great things about these shoes. Like the other reviewer I have a problem with shoes slipping off my heels. After trying a couple of different trail runners (Salomon XA and New Balance) I gave these a try despite the cost. I've done an adventure sprint and many runs/hikes with these shoes and I continue to love them. I've even purchased another pair for back up. Definitely recommended for anyone with a narrow heel and/or foot.

So Far, So Good

By:
July 24, 2004

I've been having a lot of trouble finding shoes lately that don't slip on my heel for longer runs or hikes, and I usually buy motion control running shoes. I can't say enough good about these Montrails. The first week I had them, I took them on a couple short hikes, then the next week on one 20-miler day hike. They held up incredibly-no blisters, no pain! The heel is very secure, the toe box is roomy enough that the shoe doesn't bind, and the medium flexibility in the sole is perfect. I usually wear trail runners for hiking, and run on trails with road shoes (because I like a more flexible shoe). I went running on a light and hilly trail yesterday just to try them out, and they were fantastic. Haven't had to test the Gore-Tex sleeve yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
