Preparing for the Christmas Season

Today’s featured art is Night before Christmas by Sherry Holder Hunt

Before I left for my daughter’s house on Thanksgiving Day, I hung my Christmas wreath on the front door … I had bought one and decorated it a few weeks ago so it has been hanging in my laundry room on the connecting door between the garage and the laundry room. It looks better on the front door for my neighbors to enjoy :)

The day after Thanksgiving … I read about the shopper stampede while drinking my coffee. You can read my post about it at Grief over Shopper Stampede That Killed. This made me feel VERY sick and ashamed to be a human being!

After reading the news … slowly with a heavy heart … I pulled Christmas decorations out of my closets … I found several broken ornaments this year .. they were quite fragile and I knew that … yet I had moved them before without any breakage occurring … not this time [I moved the end of August 2008] … I did not finish pulling out all the broken glass pieces for the trash … it was such a harsh reminder of how fragile life is and how easily it can be taken away too.

I decided not to put up the tree this year .. no bright lights in the window or on the front door … I will probably figure out a way to put out my candy cane lights but they do not stake into the ground … I got them to hang from my apt patio last year … guess I did not think about what I might need the following year … grin.

I pulled out my collection of Christmas stockings and hung them on the wall [my living room looks very festive and Christmas -y ... even without a tree!] and I put up a garland over the living room window and hung a few of the unbroken art glass ornaments on it .. looks very nice and I do not have to remember to plug it in or unplug it … lol.

I got out my 18 inch tiny little white tree with a foil wrapped base that has a couple red bead berry flower type sticks and put my red Texas ornament on it - it is setting on the music shelf top next to the 12 inch high fiber optic wings angel with a red velvet coat.

Then last but not lease, I hung my two musical puppy dog Christmas stockings on the inside of the front door … the dog is not too enamored of them singing and their ears with bells flopping while singing … and I am hoping she won’t pull them off the door & chew them up next week while I am gone to work.

My daughter and son-in-law came over in the afternoon, brought me some marvelous leftover Thanksgiving dinner ham and put up my shelves in the kitchen so a few of my what-nots are now on display in there … the kitchen has a fall … harvest … leaves theme … the walls were brown … my cute little stuffed pumpkins are orange … the leaves are oranges and yellows … and my forest mural is greens and yellows.

When my daughter saw my display of Christmas stockings [there are 4 full size and 8 miniature size] hanging on the wall, she said and I quote “That is a lot of stockings Mom! Are you expecting someone to fill all those up?”

ROFLOL … My answer is that no, I do not expect anyone to fill them with anything … the 4 large stockings all have Santa, 5 of the small have snowmen and 3 are Santa too. All except 1 of the large stockings are appliqued [the one that is not appliqued was the first Christmas stocking I bought for my grandson from Grandma] … I like to admire the work and the look … I do not applique … but I do appreciate it.

This is my Christmas wall art collection … I unpack it and hang it up every year the day after Thanksgiving … it wouldn’t be Christmas without them.

Happy Thanksgiving! Four Gobbler’s Strutting by Jim Jones

Today’s featured art is Four Gobbler’s Strutting by Jim Jones

Today is Thanksgiving - Happy Thanksgiving to these gorgeous wild and free turkeys … it is a gorgeous sight to see them in a field on a foggy morning with no axe, no chopping block and no roasting pan anywhere near them.Don’t get me wrong … I LOVE roasted turkey … and I do not plan to never eat it again …. BUT it is nice to see real turkeys alive and well roaming free near a forest too.

Balance … besides … I am guessing that most frozen grocery store turkeys are caged birds meant only for roasting pans … probably born in cages … raised in cages and kept in cages until time to be killed and frozen ready for us to cook on Thanksgiving Day.

I’m eating ham at my daughter’s house this year … no turkey … maybe they’ll have turkey for Christmas … but my grandson LOVES ham and doesn’t much like turkey.
